You can, as a citizen, legally own a weapon in RP!   I plan on becoming a dual citizen if I decide to move to RP for this reason!!
Any person having the following qualifications may become a citizen of the Philippines by naturalization:
He must have resided in the Philippines for a continuous period of not less than ten years.

While chatting with one of Ahya's "kuya" (he is a sergeant in the army), I brought up the subject of gun ownership with him as I saw a lot of "guards" have guns at the various business, he gave me a pamphlet (book) about gun ownership in Phil but I left it in Manila.  But I will not get into this & I will not be going that route. She have family in the Arm Forces & I will let them be the gun owners (if needed).
If we were all forced to wear a warning label, what would yours say?

Is the Filipino language, which you mentioned, Dave, Tagalog?

I'll swap rat turds and gravel in the rice for lots of good, fresh, cheap seafood any old day.

Yes, “Filipino” (or “Pilipino”) is designated as the official national language, along with English. Filipino is essentially equivalent to Tagalog.

I just started my 3rd semester of Tagalog (Pilipino) last week. This is going to be tough because I am the only non-Filipino in the whole class, and the class is conducted 95% in Tagalog. There are two Filipina girls who were born in the States, but they speak near-fluent Tagalog.

Let’s see if they can keep up with me… LOL!

The terds and gravel aren't such a big problem Jeff. It just takes an extra 5 minutes to sift through the rice to remove the terds and rocks before cooking. I agree that cheap, fresh seafod is definitely worth the extra inconvenience.  LOL!

But in general, is it necessary to have:

-bars on your windows

A very good idea! But many people have bars on their windows and don't lock their doors!

-security fence around the perimeter

I would! Most are not more than 6 foot tall and have broken glass glued on top. I would go 10 feet and add some sharp iron spikes and all of the broken glass you want!

-security system with alarm

I have a security system (alarm) with many cameras. I even focused a camera on my friend's house after he had 3 burglaries. I have some very upset punks in the neighborhood who don't have the balls to go into the Kano's house and no longer can walk into my friend's house! I have been in many of the punks houses...enjoying a cool drink and snacks with mommy, daddy, lolo, lola kuya, and ate. When several walked in and saw me in their homes, they quickly turned around and hauled azz! ;D I just like to be neighborly.

-weapon

Do you mean a gun? Nice to have a legal one, but not necessary. Guns (even fully automatics) are easy to obtain here, but make sure that the particular gun is legal to own (wife). Illegal possession of a gun can get you a stiff jail sentence, usually around 7 years. Almost anything can be a weapon, especially tools. I have the usual knives, bolos, clubs but even better, chains saws, propane torches, potato cannons and things that I will not mention!  ::) A car or truck makes a very big, lethal weapon...especially when up against criminals on motorcycles!  ::) ::) ::)

I used to train dogs. I will purchase a large dog in the near future. I have several breeds, of good quality, available locally. I am waiting to check the next liters when they arrive.

We have someone in our house at all times. When I am out of town, I sometimes bring in a few of "my guys"  ::) to keep a very good eye on things. They also look after my friends here when I am away.

When someone pisses me or my wife off...we confront them and let them know! Something most Filipinos are not used to. Most Filipinos are just too damn nice and let others walk all over them...at least until they snap! I can be a friggin' predator at times!... But my wife makes me look like a Catholic school boy. ;D Sometimes I am thinking "Baby, can't we just let them off with a warning?" ;D  Now that we are "known" in the "subdivision", we are either very well liked or hated (by people we could give a Rat's AZZ about), but respected! IMHO, if your going to live in the third world (including LA) it is best to have some big damn cojones! If not, you might as well tattoo "VICTIM" on your forehead and keep a jar of Vaseline in your pocket! Back in our home barangay everyone is our friend or relative!

Some people think that my security measures are over the top...but the results speak for itself! Overall, our city (300,000) in the Philippines is very  relaxing when compared to South Florida with it's many areas that are nothing more than third world sh-it holes within the continental United States! I had much worse problems living there! Many people there steal whatever they can get their hands on...even if it is guarded, alarmed, locked or bolted down! The "melting pot" of immigrants in South Florida never turned into the utopia that the politicians and sociologists always claimed it would become! Just a bunch of third world criminals who don't believe that American laws apply to them!

Let's not digress, this was my last option in my previous post, but....as a matter of fact...
You can, as a citizen, legally own a weapon in RP!   I plan on becoming a dual citizen if I decide to move to RP for this reason!! It has to be permitted by the authorities and "low power" , ie 22cal, 32cal pistol or a rifle or shotgun of low power and it cannot be carried on your person and MUST be kept in your home.
There are no gun ownership rights in the RP as we have here in US, that is true.
But with the right permitting you (foreigner) citizen can posses a weapon, just not carry it anywhere outside of your home on the streets, not sure about on your property outside of home.
I don't want this thread to turn into a gun ownership treatise!
Zulu
OK how about if your pinay wife owns & knows how to use a 12GA shotgun & she keeps it on her side of the bedroom? I wouldn't think if you were well liked & your wife's family was well liked that you would have any problem anyhow if the firearm had to be used at night on your own property to chase off/shoot a couple of bandits.

but I could be wrong.

If i ever decide to live on Sibuyan even if it's for a couple of months a year i would make sure that my wife purchases a mosburg model 500 while in Manila & I'll make sure that she practices with it in the back yard on some paper targets. Chances are that all the neighbors would want to see what all that noise was & once the word got out that Mr. & Mrs. piglett had a shooting iron on the property, any local undesirables would probably make themselves quite scarce ;D

I keep hearing about perimeter fences.  Is that necessary when you build a house?

Also gated communities.  I just have never had a need for a gated community where I live.  But is this something thats needed?  Heruamen lived in one of those when he visited CDO and he seemed to think it was the way to go.

My impression so far has been if your wife has family that's well respected and/or members of the local constabulary (PNP) and you are pretty well known then you won't have too many problems with crooks.

I read about a few recent home invasions and murders of expats in Angeles City and Manila that concern me.

I won't be anywhere near Cebu or Manila, but should there be a concern in the provinces about security?

I think it may come down to where in the PI you intend to live.
If it's Manila or any other large city then hell yes you want a big @ss wall
However if your on a remote island & the local mayor was one of the sponsers of your wedding & your father inlaw is good friends with one of the local cops then you could probably get away with a wooden (much less costly) fence around your property & this would only to be to keep squaters from moving in on your land.

That is my situation & if I build a house on my wifes home island i don't figure on needing a huge wall.

Hey Jeff,

Now you are on to something! It hasn't gotten quite that far yet. Several nights ago I drove around the neighborhood wearing black clothes, gloves, and cheap sunglasses on my motorcycle, with the lights out. I pulled up behind a few bad boys on their stripped down little girlie motorbikes unnoticed. When they finally saw me a few feet away, they just about crashed!  ;D Then I slowly passed by a few times where they were parked telling others about the "loko Kano!" I was slightly disappointed that I didn't hear any "Hey Big Joes!" :'( (I have already instructed them that they are to address me as "Big Joe!")  ;D  No punks have raced through the neighborhood on their noisy little girlie bikes for the past few nights. We were even invited by the kuya of one of the punks to a birthday party today. I brought my own bottle opener for the San Mig.  ::)

Dave

Now this is a bad boy bike! 4 cylinders, a rat on the front fender, pigs on the headlight and tail light (it may be a cute fluffy bunny), a fluffy seat for when the rhoids flare up, and pink on the outside and hopefully on the inside where I like it!   ;)

Hey Ray!

That is awesome! I need to start working on mine. My daughter is learning very fast! She is consistently the best on all of the Pilipino/Tagalog tests. She has not missed one question yet!  ;D I figured that most of the other kids had a head start on her, with Tagalog TV and movies.

Good Luck!

That’s probably all the hormones in those Happy Meals that made your daughter so smart, that and her mom’s genes…   ;)

Maybe she could tutor you in her spare time? Five pesos/hr sounds about right to me.

These Filipinos in my class may talk Tagalog at 90 mph, but I’m the only one who could recite the ABAKADA (alphabet) correctly. One other guy is weak in Tagalog…he is half-Filipino & half-Greek. I don’t know which half is which, so I make sure he doesn’t sit behind me!   :o

Last semester, despite 80% of the class being of Filipino decent, I managed to finish at the top of my class. Most of these new-generation Filipinos over here can’t get to class on time, don’t do their homework assignments, spend class time texting, and can’t pass the tests. This has been easy so far.

Does your daughter already know how to sing Bahay Kubo, Lupang Hinirang, & Dalawang Mga Daliri by heart?  :D

Hey Ray,

Instead of my daughter tutoring me in Tagalog...I think I would like her teacher.   :o

You are smart to stay the hell away from that Greek!!!  :o

My daughter is at school. I will ask her later if she knows those songs. About the only song I know is the Tagalog version of Salidumay.  ;D
