tell me about Brazil
« on: January 10, 2010, 01:14:16 PM »
The company I work for has a ton of work coming online there in the next few years and there is a better that 50/50 chance I will get relocated there. We have several facilities there so I really have no idea where I would be.

So just some general info would give me an idea if I want to embrace this or if I want to do what I can to avoid it.

So far all of the guys we have sent down there have stayed and a few have bought homes and gotten married.

Odds are I will already be married to a Filipina before I go there, how would she be treated?

Brazil is a VERY big country, the world's 5th largest, I believe, after Russia, Canada, China, and USA.  It will be difficult to help you without more details about your trip.

The general stuff is that the language is Brazilian Portuguese, Portuguese in Portugal is slightly different.  The currency is the real and its value against the dollar has been rising rapidly for the past 3 or 4 years.  The exchange rate right now is around 1.75 reais per dollar.  Of course you know that Brazil is hosting the 2012 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.  Brazil took in more slaves from Africa than any other country in the world and was the world's last country to officially abolish slavery in 1888.  Brazil has more residents of African descent than any other country except Nigeria.  It also has more residents of Japanese descent than any other country except Japan.  Brazil has one of the world's highest degrees of inequality in the distributions of income and wealth.

Your observation that ALL of the men who went to Brazil STAYED there should tell you something.  Most Brazilian women are good looking and have sexy bodies.  In addition, there is an acceptance of sex as a natural human need.  Lots of European men move to or retire to Brazil by marrying a Brasiliera.

I have been researching Brazil also. There are a lot of great cities: Fortelesa, Receife,  Florianapolis, Bahia something in the north. Some other smaller cities in the south that have light skinned blonde haired women with almost pure German ancestry. It seems like an incredible place. I would love to go there. But I am already so familiar with Colombia, I just am not ready to throw in the towel yet on Colombia.

Sorry for the spelling of the cities. I am pretty sure they are not correct, but I am in a hurry, late for work!

First of all, to which part of Brazil are you probably coming? It's a very big country and things might be very different from region to region. I live in the North, but I know some other regions. I've been to Rio many times and it's my favorite city in the country. If I could chose, I'd definitely live there. It's not as dangerous as they show on TV and people are very nice.

In general, I'd tell you it's not as well structured as the US (duh), but it's a great country. I know many gringos and they all like it here. I don't think there will be any problem with your Filipina. I'd just suggest she studied Portuguese before coming, so it would be easier for her to find friends and not feel so lonely.

If you want to know more, just ask  :)
