Her parents don't drive, they live way out in the country & if they have to go somewhere they hire a car & driver.
I guess that's how it's done there.

Actually, it's not very common to hire a car and driver except on special occasions, or perhaps when escorting important guests from out of town (that's you pig).  :D

Public transportation is what the vast majority of Filipinos rely on to get around. There are large passenger ferries for inter-island travel, smaller passenger boats, "pump boats", and bankas for local travel over the water, busses and large jeepneys for inter-city travel, smaller jeepneys, "multi cabs", and shuttle busses for getting around town, and tricycles or motor scooters that will take you almost anywhere and drop you at your door.

You will even see horse-drawn carriages and folks riding water buffaloes in some places.

Air-conditioned public transportation usually commands a premium price.

Very few Filipino families have their own cars, jeeps, or even scooters, and those are mostly in the larger towns or cities.

Dave! You didn't import one of those La Cucaracha air horns, did you?

Hey Jeff,

No, I wish I had! Or maybe one of those Ahooga horns.  ;D

Hey piglett,

Like Ray said, most Filipinos usually rely on public transportation. Even though we have several vehicles, we often use public transportation. It is cheap, quick, and more convenient.

I was planning to take a pump boat ride up river soon to visit the marshlands and the Manobo tribe. The marshlands are like the Florida Everglades. Sadly, a 12 year old girl who lived there was killed by a 25+ foot croc there a few weeks ago. It bumped and flipped their little boat while they were on their way to school.  I wanted to get into the croc hunt with the locals (I've been on gator hunts in the Everglades), but after the horror movie Crocodile was on TV the other night, I was grounded.  I am not even allowed to swim in the river. ::) I guess I will go to a local hotel tomorrow to swim laps in the pool. I will probably make a pumpboat ride down river next month for another town's fiesta.

When I was in the Philippines the last time, two girls were killed and eaten by a huge saltwater croc while they were washing clothes in a river (another area). They showed them being cut out of the croc's stomach on the TV news.
