Hello from Down Under
« on: March 15, 2009, 05:55:16 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I am 28 yrs old and from Australia. I split up with my girlfriend of almost 5 years about a year ago. I am sick of Australian women. All of the decent ones are already taken. The others are either gold diggers, snobs or have no ambition in life (work a part time job and spend their weekly wage on going out and drinking alcohol and buying clothes).

I am looking for a genuine woman who will respect a decent guy. Somebody who will appreciate the things I do for them instead of taking them for granted. I am looking to meet a nice Latin woman.

I will save my questions about good sites to start looking at until I read the forums a bit more.

If I met some potentials I would be willing to travel to spend time with them. Do many of them speak good english? At the moment my spanish skills are non existant but I am going to start learning it soon. I would prefer a woman that speaks good english otherwise it will be difficult to communicate.

Are there any other Aussies out there who would like to share their experiences?

Welcome KennyG

You will find lots of valuable info on this forum as well as some useless banter over various subjects but it's worth your time to read through it and get to know the contributors. All of us are open to answering questions you may have and sharing from our experience.

As far as english speaking latin women, they are very few and far between so I'd recommend getting started on some spanish studies soon. I was never motivated to learn a second language until after my first trip to Colombia, then I was very motivated. A translator  will be your life line, but 3 can be a crowd once you find a special lady!

Good luck.

Hey Kenny. Welcome here. If you're wanting English speaking girls, you might consider the Philippines, also. It's a lot closer for you too.

  Hi and welcome aboard Kenny,

As others have said, there are many knowledgeable people here on the board, and if there is a subject or a question that you did not find by going through the old posts, please ask. There are no dumb questions.

Good luck in your search!

Thanks for the warm welcome. It looks like I better start learning Spanish! At least have a bit of an idea. It would probably take years to become fluent. I look foward to having a good read through the forums. There seems like a lot of good stuff in there.

Thanks for the suggestion Jeff, it is always another option. Being able to communicate well is such an advantage. However I am more attracted to the latin women rather than the asian women though. Maybe it is because I am half asian myself and the asian women might remind me too much of my mum......Hmm might stick to latin women for now if I can learn some spanish.

Welcome kennyg, It's great you plan to learn spanish and better yet to try to find a lady that speaks your language. I am sure you will learn fast enough, do you speak other languages? if you do it will be even faster than you think.

If you ever need help with spanish feel free to ask :)

Ok My first thing should be to learn Spanish. Where does one start? Who has the best software/program available that dosn't cost an arm and a leg? This old dog didn't have to learn a second language in high school. Boy I am kicking myself now. Any suggestion?

Thanks,
Les

Buy a text book (high school or college, used is OK, the college book stores are full of them). Buy a Dictionary--University of Chicago is a good one and has a good explanation of the grammar rules, pronunciation rules and even a good 'regional differences' section. And practice. Practice. Practice with real live people, not a DVD. You're in Texas, right? You can't find a bunch of Mexicans to practice with? Sure you can. Disclaimer: While it might not strike you that way at first, actually Mexicans speak slowly and distinctly compared to most other Spanish speakers, for a beginner, they're good to practice with and certainly readily available throughout Texas, ha ha (but it might not be considered 'polite' or 'friendly' to discuss immigration issues in general and individuals' status in particular, if you catch my drift). Also, try watching channel 23 and 49. Novelas, basically adult themed comic books, romance themed for women, tough guy adventure themed for men, are readily available (either with the magazines or right in front of the cash register, like The Star and Enquirer are here) in any grocery store that caters to Latinos. They are excellent for reading practice, and having the pictures show the plot line is a great help in learning new words.  Don't byte off more than you can chew and become frustrated, don't be intimidated by the '14 tenses', 'subjunctive case' and stuff like that, you can 'advance' yourself into that stuff latter, in the beginning, you can get a long way towards having the ladies understand you with simple present tense and a basic vocabulary.

Not many Mexicans in Australia, I reckon. Too long a swim.

You might try Rosetta Stone. I was impressed with it. It doesn't work anything like the old Berlitz/Pinsular listen-repeat-memorize techniques, but rather connects pictures with words, like children learn their native language. It's really quite effective. The only downside is you have to be in front of a computer. It's not something you can do in a car on a commute.
