Well, you'll probably have to learn a few new habits in personal hygene, like washing your hands after you eat barbequed ribs. No, letting the dog lick them clean won't cut it, since she probably won't accept the concept that there's nothing cleaner than a hound's tooth. In general though, I'm not Mr. Clean, myself, and my wife pretty much is. In any case, it hasn't been a source of friction - we've both adapted a bit. It's interesting to note that the word for "clean" and "beautiful" in the Japanese language are the same: kirei. It's just part of the culture.

I think the last time I bought a Japan rail pass it was about $350 for two weeks. Now it looks to be a little over $400 or so: http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en003.html If you're planning a lot of travel the Green Car pass is worth the extra. Last time I bought one, I was on the shinkansen almost every day - really racked up the miles and visited a lot of interesting places. To show you how much you save, round trip right now from Tokyo to Osaka, about 4 hours on the Hikari (express) shinkansen (bullet train) is about $100 in the regular car and $150 in the green (first class) car.

The hardships...haha. Nahh I was thinking more along the lines if I don't clean up a table at a restaurant or something. I take it that's not a problem.

Ya I checked the price of the rail passes before I posted. Well, it is quite a bit of savings, and the shinkansen would be well worth it. Time off is more expensive than a little more expensive ticket for most people I think...better to make use of it as best you can.

 Those are called "glamor Shots". Lots of ladies use them.

Vietnamese would be a good choice. That is if you can live with Nuc Mam (fish sauce) breath. Filipino's eat something similar, but it doesn't stink up a room. Bagoong, a filipino sauce does that.

 Yes , Vietnam would be good. A nice trip too. Ride a motorcycle up Hwy. 1 to Hanoi, from Saigon, it's worth it.

 However, there is alot of "nightlife"
too in Saigon (Ho Chi Min City), so you need to be careful, that you don't waste your time with ho's.

 So why do you law students stress so much? I've never been to law school. Three shots of Nyquil is rather lame. A whole bottle is better, however it has antihistamine and give you weird dreams all night. Not a good sleep. What's your Grandad's syrup? Hope it aint Robitussin DM, that America's dirty little secret. Available anywhere, and if you take enough and smoke a joint, it's an Acid (LSD) trip.  Most common syrup in the country and over the counter too. The Army just started using the active ingredient, Dextromethorphan, as a pain killer for wounded G.I.'s.
I could have told them that 30 years ago. LOL!

 Anyway, I didn't mean just go get laid, I meant get an education in Southeast Asia. A well rounded one is best. Your still young, you got time. Better to know the dark side as well as the good, in my opinion. You are more informed then.

So why do you law students stress so much? I've never been to law school.

Law school is pretty much a prolonged hazing ritual. That's been my impression at least. Profs yell at you, you can get marked down part of a grade (which is your future) for not answering questions quick enough...

The teaching style is called the socratic method, which pretty much is putting one student after another on the spot in class and grilling them.

The tests are often ridiculous...some you can have the law all memorized by heart and can type 80 words per minute, yet you can't answer the question completely in 3 hours (can use laptops for exams, but watch for typoes...one of my profs will fail you if you have more than 3 typoes or spelling errors on an exam).

I think especially at a lower-ranked school like mine where you have no possibility of anything near the top jobs unless you're in the top 3 of your class (mine is 140 students) makes it a bit stressful as well, especially if you've got one of those pole positions. The top 10 or so spots are a bloody fight for the most part. Went to an honors reception and all it was were people sizing up the competition...like a bunch of starving dogs thrown in a pit together.

Anyways, that's just my experience with it so far.

Statistically, 40+% of law students are depressed. Anecdotally 50% of relationships end in law school. I think substance and alcohol abuse is pretty high but don't know the stats. Just a general feeling hahaha. Student org socials often involve getting absolutely plowed.

I think generally people just buy dextromethorphan on the street as DXM nowadays. Not into drugs myself, just have a brother who's...well...let's just say he's done it all as far as drugs go.

Seems like a better and better idea. Think I've pretty much narrowed it down to 'Nam, Korea, and Japan. Less so Korea, seems like it'd be a lot harder to do, and seems like a Vietnamese girl might not like living in OR/WA if I decided to move back up to the Northwest. Do some more research I guess, like you said, I got time. Besides, if I rushed into anything, taking advantage of my position as a white American guy, my parents would disown me I think.

I think Viet Nam and Japan are both good choices as potentials. A girl from Viet Nam will have a lot of adapting to do, weather-wise, no matter where she moves in the US. When Tess Brittain (married to Stephen, an attorney in Southern Cal and a regular here) first came from the PI, she was freezing in the Southern California summer, and bundled up all the time. Lately she seems like she's adjusted to it. Plenty of girls from the tropics adjust to weather all over the US and Canada. We had one poster, Minnesota Guy, who brought a Filipina to rural Minnesota. He was a very rural kind of guy and had an outhouse. Imagine heading out in the middle of the night during a 40 below blizzard to relieve yourself. She talked him into indoor plumbing after the first winter, but other than that, they seemed to get along great. Haven't heard from him in a year or so.

While being a white collar white guy may be great bait in Viet Nam, but it won't be in Japan. In Japan, you'll also have to get past her family. I got the blessings of my father-in-law, but Bob S, another regular who married a Japanese girl, didn't, so that threw a bit more complexity into the scene. On the other hand, you can be pretty sure a Japanese girl isn't a green card shark.

If you're interested in Vietnamese women, you should spend some time in Little Saigon, to get a feel for the people, food, language, culture, etc. I go there often and am pretty surprised at how few roundeyes you see ther. I see more in Tokyo than in Little Saigon. I'd be happy to give you a giuded tour sometime.

Actually, it's hotter where I lived in OR (the valley) during the summer than it is down here, by a decent amount. Just cold and rainy the rest of the year heh.

Well I had the great fortune of trashing my car over spring break, so until I get that problem fixed I probably won't be doing a lot of running around town...except in a literal sense. And on the few round-eyes note, went down to a Japanese department store down in Costa Mesa a while back and I swear there were 2 or 3 other whities there, and almost never see any round-eyes in this Japanese restaurant I go to a bit. Kinda wierd...people down here don't seem very adventurous. Went out with a group of people to dinner and they went to some chain restaurant which totally threw me off. Only been to a chain sit-down restaurant once or twice in my life and that was because we didn't feel like looking around in an unfamiliar town at night.

Seeing someone order a $20 well-done steak at TGIF damn near made me fall over hahahaha. I could cook a better steak without a grill.

I'm guessing Mitsuwa in Costa Mesa? I'm in there fairly often. Which Japanese restaurant do you frequent? We're always in the market for another good one. I'm with you on the chains. Why bother when there are so many great little storefronts, especially along the coast.

Ya, mitsuwa. The sake there is about half the price it was at Uwajimayas in Portland. Can actually afford the good stuff. Bought a mochi for $30 (OK, I was aiming for the $15 one but damn those kanji) and it was _SO_ much better than the swill I usually drink.

Ahh, there's just this little Japanese place across from my apartment, Wakai Sushi. I honestly don't think I'm in much of a position to evaluate it because I haven't been to many restaurants down here (feel lame as hell eating alone at a restaurant), and there aren't many good Japanese restaurants in OR. Compared to the places where I lived in OR, this place is better than any of them, but not sure how much weight that evaluation carries. Decently cheap+close+better than what I'm used to=good for me.

Here you have Mitsuwa (Torrance, Little Tokyo & Costa Mesa) competing with Marukai (Gardena and Costa Mesa) and throw in a bit of Nijiya in Gardena, and you get some great deals.

We had some ridiculous places where I went to college...one place they started learning how to cut sushi after they opened the restaurant hahaha...what a joke. 15 years or so for a real sushi chef right?

Their ramen is a big step above what they serve at Mitsuwa's if nothing else, though I don't think that's saying much, heh.

 I guess by "hard A", Gramps syrup, you mean hard booze. Be careful of that. Especially drinking to go to sleep. After a time it can make you a drunk. Pretty quickly too, if you use it that way.

 I still recommend a trip to Angeles.  Nam is good. Japan, Hong Kong and China are difficult in my opinion, because the cultures are so hard to learn. Plus I've never really been into Japanese or Chinese girls. I like the island look of a Filipina, plus I'm used to them. I lived in Hong Kong 3 years and I had a Chinese stepmother from Taiwan. I have 2 younger brothers that are Chinese-Irish, but look Chinese. One looks like a BIG not too fat Buddha, smokes weed, carries a pistol and calls everyone "My Nigg@". He's making rap music and studying music production (last I heard). The other is straight as hell, his weakness is women and he manages an Old Navy store. They are both great joys in my life. Great guys, both of them.

 Japan I know not much about. Been there a few times, but didn't get to see much. I know the Japanese kids and their families that I knew growing up, were very nice. I know Saki tastes like [snip], and Sushi blows, in my opinion. Japan Airlines is good, ( you can smoke on board, I think), Bukkake movies are silly. Japanese don't like to marry outside their race, and family approval is a big deal. Japanese girls are pretty. This is all I know.

 So it's not that I don't like Chinese or Japanese, I just find their cultures too much for me. Rather boring as well, in my opinion, only my opinion.

 Vietnamese...well, they are fresh in my memory of the war (news, T.V. reading etc.). Nice folks in person, though I wouldn't trust 'em as far as I could throw them out of a chopper. JUST KIDDING!!   No flames please people. Actually they are very nice, but sly. Nothing wrong with sly, just I don't like it. However, I am no expert. We have people on here married and engaged to Viets, so they can tell you better. Also Vietnam is a beautiful place.

 Anyway, just rambling here. Take that trip to Asia when you can. It's the best way to learn.

I have to do a lot less work than most people because I'm a good writer when I want to be, and profs will miss your errors if they get into your writing. It's really not that hard, but staying in the top few is a pain in the ass.

The hell does everyone call "sake" "saki?" I like both in any case...wasabi makes it all better. Don't like kelp and seaweed much though, could never acquire the taste.

 I'm not kidding about that. My definition of a drunk is an alcoholic. Someone who has a chemical change come over them as soon as they take a drink. They can't stop on their own. I am one. Recovering at the moment. Almost died last time I tried to stop without hospitalization. Not suggesting this is you, at all, but in a couple of years you could be on your way. It's a progressive thing. 4-6 drinks is a lot. Just be careful. I suggest Codeine over that!

 I was never a big fan of lawyers (got screwed bad by one once, cost me 27 months of my life), however never really was anti lawyer either. Now one of my best friends, Stephen Brittain is a lawyer. I have met very few men as kind, cool and caring as him. So my opinion of lawyers these days is good, thanks to him.

 I would have liked to go to law school, but wasted my youth. Hoping to begin creative writing and Arabic at the local community college, by the summer. Gonna write a book, but need to learn how first! Bet I'll sell it and make the NY Times non-fiction best seller list. Watch me. LOL! The latest two life stories involving wild life stories were nothing compared to mine. The first was fake, and the second, a girl was tame in my opinion, but they sold millions. I believe I can top them. If they can make it, I definitely can.

 People tell me I have a talent for writing. I think they are right. I posted a flight training story or two, and everyone liked it. I never got to post my story of my first solo cross country flight, because the other board was gone by then I think. Might post it here someday, if others want it. It's very interesting. Got lost going to my first airport. Was flying around for 30 mins. lost as hell! LOL!

A lot of it does, I'll admit, but some of the better/more expensive stuff is pretty decent. I can't drink much of it though, upsets my stomach a bit. Never was much of a wine person in general, despite growing up in the wine country of Oregon. Always preferred breweries to wineries.
