I remember Pete was looking into shipping a car into Colombia but decided it was cheaper to just buy a car there. He said the taxes placed on a shipped car were almost as much as the car itself costs. He even looked into getting someone working at the embassy to bring it in because embassy employees can have their car shipped free of charge. I don't remember any more of it as I just heard him discussing it and that was over two years ago.

from what i can remember, i don't think it is possible to import vehicles from the u.s. it may be possible from other south american countries and central american countries per an agreement they have. friends their told me it was a way for narcos to launder money in the past so now it is heavily restricted.

You are permitted to bring a new car into Colombia from the US but the tax is about 40% and you cannot bring a used vehicle into Colombia.  If you buy a car that made OR assembled in Colombia there is very little tax so you can select almost any model Chevolet AND PAY ABOUT WHAT YOU WOULD IN THE US

he looked at Audi and Mazda and Chevy,  all the Colombian models had no options, hardly no airbags, had small under powered engines and were over priced from their US models by $ 9000 to $ 12,000, depending the model. a piece of krap Chevy optra runs $23,000, about same equivalent model in US runs $ 15,000. seems like the car companies in Colombia don't want you getting  what you really want, your very limited. it might be a better idea to bring your own car in . even at a 40 % tax. wonder when it gets into port city, how you pay the taxes and get it a pink slip????

I had a buddy import one and it was such a pain in the a$$ he decided he would never do that again.
Like Bogota Jim said  it must be a new 2007 or 2008 model, no used models.  Also like others have stated the taxes are very high, closer to 45 percent of the value of the new vehicle. He will have to go through the office of the DIAN to do it as they handle all of these transactions.  Even if you buy a car assembled in Colombia the taxes are still outrageous compared to US standards.... just not as high if you import it directly.

Then there is the question of getting warrenty work done. Because it was a US model and he imported it directly he had to pay for every repair out of pocket. If you buy the car is the US then the warrenty is only good for the US at least with the model he brough it.
If he wants something with power he can get it in Colombia. Ive seen several Audi A8´s SUV´s, and big BMW´s that are exactly like there US counterpart. There are Audi, BMW, mercedes, and Porsche dealers in bogota and they can get him whatever he wants. As far as importing a car just to try and save money then that is not going to happen.

Shipping a vehicle here is full of difficulties. Yes you can, but don't, be smart and shop here...you can get what you need here and be void of all the headaches associated with bringing a car here!
