wireless zones
« on: June 19, 2007, 10:00:24 PM »
I am told by a friend that there are area's in Cali where a person with a laptop can use free wireless internet service. My questions are: 1. Is that true? 2. Where are some of these zones located? 3. Are these area's/ zones marked with a sign or some other marking?

Dont' know of any in Cali as I've never been there. I did not see any in Medellin, but since my girlfriend has DSL, it was not a problem for me. My blackberry also worked fine for email in Colombia, but I didn't dare use the phone at the international roaming rate of about four dollars a minute!! Now only if i can get an unlocked Iphone.........

I recall last time i was in Cali my friend mentioned something about certain area's or zones around the city where a person can use the internet free. I do recall him telling me that one of those locations was near the food court at Leno's. I never did understand how a person would locate these zones, I mean are there signs or a map or what?

I doubt anyone in Cali is trying to give away anything for free to the point of putting up signs. More than likely, they are unaware that their wireless router is unsecure and people are leeching off of them. If a router is not set up correctly so that only certain MAC addresses can connect or if they have not set WEP keys or passowrds in order to connect, then anyone with a wireless laptop can "see" their network and latch on.

Well Soltero this is not what I have been led to believe. From what i understand there are indeed areas of the city that offer free internet zones. I am told that one of those areas is at certain tables at the food court next to Leno's in Chpi. What im trying to find out is if there are and where there are other such zones in the city of Cali and if so how are they found?
