N-400 Question: Letters from Friends?
« on: April 29, 2007, 09:42:05 AM »
We are now in the process of gathering the documentation to file Wendy's N-400 for her citizenship.

I know in the past, the instructions have asked the applicant to supply letters from  friends who would swear they had known the applicant for years and the marriage was legitimate. We can't find that requirement in the instructions anywhere now. Are we missing it, or has this requirement been changed? Does anybody know?

Thanks, Tim

In 15 years of immigration practice, we have never used the letter affidavits in citizenship applications and never had them asked for. Probably because marriage is not a prerequisite of most N400 applications except as part of the 3 to 5 year filing eligibility.

If I recall, 751 petitions ask for that as a possible source of verification of relationship. And we dont look at the letters as a primary source document since there are many other sources that have higher reliability.

Hi Tim,

That was suggested evidence for the Removal of Conditions on Residence, not the application for Naturalization.

Tim,

If you haven't already done so, download a copy of the Guide to Naturalization, Form M-476   http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/M-476.pdf

It contains lot's of info needed to fill out the N-400 and it was a big help when we did the wife's petition.

I like the format of the N-400 fillable PDF form. It was easy to complete and everything seemed to fit nicely. I wish they would make their other forms in a similar fashion.

Guess I was getting confused with the removal of conditions (which isn't surprising since we didn't have to do it). Thanks for the responses!
