Gringos Carrying Guns in Latin America

Anybody familiar with the laws concerning concealed weapons permits for foreigners visiting South America? Safety comes first. Thanks in advance

Check on the rules for locals. That will be a good starting point.

This has been discussed extensively on poorbuthappy but a short answer is you must apply for a permit which is issued by a branch of the Army and must purchase the gun and bullets from them as well. It´s a big deal process that you couldn´t hope to complete on a short visit since you have to have a Temporal visa and cedula to apply. So far as I know there is no difference in the requirements for foreigners. Of course there are plenty of ilegal guns around and someone could probobly hook you up with one. However if you get caught with it and it´s on record and anyone has ever been killed with it you go to jail for a long time.

As a visitor you will not be able to carry a gun and as a visitor you should not need one.

The process for getting a gun however is not as complex as one may think considering Colombia often makes the simple things difficult.
You would fill out an application.
You would provide written references who they don’t call.
You would take a simple psychology test where you are asked to draw a picture of a woman. Keep telling yourself when you do this don’t be creative, don’t be creative, don’t be creative.
You would take about 4 hour of gun training on laws and usage where you are given a passing grade even if you miss the targets.
You are interviewed by a military officer (getting the appointment is where all the wait comes from) who doesn’t ask you any questions and signs off on the approval.

You are then allowed to shoot your gun in the air during New Years while waving a beer bottle in your other hand.

The most difficult part is they make getting a gun expensive and out of reach for those most in need of one.

The above poster neglected to mention the "pasado judicial" requirement which is a background check by the Department Of Administrative Security (D.A.S.) but the whole issue is moot if you don´t have a visa that allows you to reside in Colombia.

The above poster neglected to mention

That’s me Mr. Negligence.

I was giving a summary not a complete list. You also need to provide a statement of why you need a gun.

My answer was well I am an American, and lots of eyes are on me when I walk the streets, and at times I carry lots of money, sometimes I am followed and being an American I am too fat and out of shape to protect myself unaided. And I have been chased before and no one seems to care if they go after me particularly the police who often don’t have guns themselves, why they give the policeman holsters without guns I’ll never know I can just hear the police captain telling his men before their shift, “ok guys its dangerous out there don’t forget your holsters” I can only assume the policemen with guns probably don’t have bullets no wonder they turn there back when a crime is taking place. They actually allocate bullets here if one night you go out on a shooting rampage that’s it the funs over for 3 month’s till your next allocation period. Anyway back to being chased it’s kind of scary knowing you’re on your own and no one is going to help you and your moments away from being jumped and taken with little regard. So you can see why I would need a gun how else is an American going to be able to protect himself from these voracious Colombian women.

Jamie sez - and at times I carry lots of money

very, very foolish Jamie.  This is the 21st century, most transactions can be done electronically if you plan it properly between you and they, unless someone is doing something illegal.

Areas in Cali and Bogota that handle expensive purchases and transactions (jewelry stores, for instance)  have private, armed security and the guards have at least two clips of bullets.  My favorite armed guards are the ones around the currency exchanges with the bad-ass shotguns.  If one is unavoidably carrying large amounts of cash, it is wise to be in those city blocks that have private armed security, otherwise, make your own security arrangements and NEVER put yourself in a high-risk situation... in Colombia or the USA.

Since I am such a neophyte here in the eyes of the countless "expurts" on this forum the above comments are worthless, of course.

Great responses, thanks guys,

A "bodyguard" sounds like a better way to go. A streetwise kid to watch my back from time to time. I do a lot of my vacationing off the beaten path.  The trade-off between safety (convenience) of the places expecting business and tourism and authentic culture experience of the places that don't expect business and tourism is worth it a lot of the times.

I like Jamie's humor.

Your website needs a blog, I like your stories.

You must have a number of disgruntled customers who were afraid to use their credit cards, if you carry a lot of cash around and need a gun like that :-)

Dvito,

i can only speak for panama where getting a gun is not impossible being a forigner, but you ahve to have a good reason. Most forigners and locals who get a license, won tehre own business, or work in a business where there is some kind of danger. I am applying for my license at the moment, and even though it takes time its worth it.

I travelled last sunday to darien with a bodyguard, he is a police captain who charged me 100 bucks for all day. I suggest you dont use a street wise kids, because they have even street wiser friends, and what knocking over a gringo, if they can get a couple of 100 bucks. I think its better two pay a off duty police or army guy, if the [snip] hits the fan, these people are usually better trained to handle a situation, plus they are law inforcment and can therefore handle any questions from the police if there is a situation.

Jamie, I didn't realize the city employees snuck something into the water down there in BAQ (or maybe it's your new microwave after the power failure)...I had not noticed your incessant humor in prior posts, but upon re-reading your post, I sense self-depreciation, something that I hadn't noticed in prior writings by you. Perhaps your female clients are having a different effect on you than before.  Analysis by the many expurts on this forum may be needed, to account for this!
