I too have stayed at both...but I really couldn't say which is better.
I'd say if it was your first time to Colombia I would recommend El Prado because of the nice architecture. In my opinion it had more of a "latin" style to it. The pool area is nice and they have a small outside bar/pub that attracts a few people to just have a few drinks. Everything is wide open. I stayed in one of their bigger suites which was kinda cool. It was like a little studio apartment. If it's your first time and your on a "latin kick" then I'd recommend this place first.
Dann Carlton is also nice, but in a different way. Like FT said...it's more modern and american looking. I've stayed in 3 different hotels in Barranquilla and this is the only one that had a bath tub, and a nice size one at that. If modern comfort is your only goal, then this would be the one for you. It's nice from top to bottom and it's a rock's throw from the Buena Vista mall and it looks like it's in a more affluent part of town.
I'd like to throw one more in...for the people trying to save where they can. I would recommend the Hotel Majestic. The outside leaves something to be desired, but I've stayed there 3 times and the rooms are clean and cool, a big shower...enough for 2 people with 2 shower heads on opposite ends of the walls. regular pool...nice friendly staff and you get free breakfast. For 2 people...queen bed...I think it's about $50 dollars a night. There are other hotels around this price, but I can't comment on those. If any one is staying here in the future...the manger (was) Maria Jose...she speaks english.
