Thai vs. Philipino
« on: August 14, 2006, 12:02:19 PM »
Hi, I am new to the forum here and would like to know other members experiences if any on a thai wife vs a philipino wife. I have thought about and researched getting married to an asian woman for some time. I have narrowed my search down to a few philipino ladies and a thai lady. All are educated and of course beautiful asian women. There are a few forums that discuss living with a philipino woman, but I can not seem to find any pertaining to thai women. Anyone here have experience with both?

Hi dummy, welcome aboard!

Filipina and Thai ladies both nice.

Have you traveled to either Thailand or the Philippines yet? If not, it's time to get on the plane and go meet these ladies. You should be able to meet all four in one trip and have a nice vacation too.

Welcome to the board. I'd give you the same advice as I gave to ttt who was considering the Philippines and Viet Nam: http://www.goodwife.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=767

Thank you all for your advice. I am planning a trip to samui at end of Sept. I was more interested in learning the particular habits of the women that is unique to each country. For instance I learned on one site that the main utensile used for eating in the Phils is the fingers. There is a lot of information like that on women from the phils and the boards are dominated with information of the phils. I cant seem to find much about the women in Thailand. I was sure I would be finding my future mate in the phils, but the woman I have met in Thailand is definately worth a visit. So I guess I am mainly looking for knowledge on Thailand. I know I can not make a dicesion with out visiting and that will be the biggest influence on my decision, but like a good boyscout, I like to be prepared.

Thanks,

Dummy

Here's a pretty good summary of common Thai customs: http://www.jobmonkey.com/teaching/asia/html/thailand_customs.html

For a good introduction to the culture for a first-time traveler, try the Culture Shock! series. I can recommend Culture Shock! Philippines but I haven’t personally read Culture Shock! Thailand. You can find them on amazon.com.

You can find a wealth of information about different cultures on the Internet, but sometimes it can be biased or misleading, especially if given from the viewpoint of a foreigner. For example, you said you learned that the main eating utensil in the Phils is the fingers? While many people do eat meals with their fingers, mostly at home, that is not going to be the norm that you will find over there, from my experience. Actually, the most common eating utensil is the spoon, or more accurately, the spoon and fork. The spoon is used also as a knife to cut up foods while eating.

Like the Philippines, I found the Thai people to be very friendly to visitors so you should have an enjoyable time. The Philippines is generally more Westernized than Thailand and English is much more common in the Philippines. Mostly, just watch what the local folks do as a rough guide, like removing your shoes before entering a house.

How long is your upcoming trip? One recommendation I would have is not to commit yourself to spending your  whole trip with one lady. Just in case you don’t hit it off at first, leave yourself an out if you need to escape. Always have a backup plan to spend your time if things don’t go according to expectations.

If you have more than a couple of weeks, you might want to look into making a stop in the Philippines on your way back. Sometimes you can get a good deal on additional stopovers, depending on the airline.

And Stephen says to take lots of pictures and post some after you get back… :D

Don't forget Thai Blogs for more travel and cultural info.
See also Farang Online for travel info.

I've never been to Thailand but have known quite a few Thai women who immigrated to the States and live in CA.  So from my limited experience, all things being equal, I'd go Thai just for the cuisine. :D

I'm living in Thailand now, after having been to the Philippines many times.  I love the women in both countries.  A couple years ago I would have probably decided to live in the Philippines, mainly because the women all speak good English.

On my last trip to Thailand, though, the young Thai women spoke pretty decent English.  I guess they're teaching it in school now.  Thailand has a more interesting and exotic culture.  The food is infinitely better than the Philippines.  The women are stunning, especially here in Chiang Mai, where I now live.  The only problem bringing a Thai woman to a Western culture like the U.S. is they sometimes have difficulty adjusting.  I think it's because everything is so different than in Thailand.  Filipinas, on the other hand, adjust well to our culture.  Both women are fun-loving, playful, affectionate and friendly.

I hope this helps.

Thank you all for your advice. I spent the last three weeks of October in Thailand and had a great time. I hit it off great with the lady I went to see. We spent a week up in Chiangmai, a few days with her parents in Burriram,  a week where she lives on Koh Samui, and a few days on Koh Phanang where she has some property. Great time!! Will post some pics soon.
