For the Love of Asian Women....
« on: March 25, 2015, 04:46:33 PM »
I came across this Canadian artist called Tom Cattt.  He's really into the whole Asian thing.  And loves Asian women as you can see in his video.  Please comment away.

Well, that was interesting. Kind of gay, but interesting.

Geeeze James, Never mind the Hello Kitty thing, and the fact that Filipinos have a hopeless addiction to the sweetest, sappiest love songs, keeping 'easy listening' pop songs --songs rarely heard in the USA in recent decades very much alive and well in radio rotation there--THAT video was hokey and light by even their standards!

Filipinos still play The Carpenters, England Dan and John Ford Coley, Air Supply and such as if they're still giving concerts. Actually, I think Coley, as well as Air Supply, still are giving concerts over there.

Like David Hasslehoff's music as well as  Englebert Humperdinck (real name--Arnold George Dorsey) were much bigger in Europe then and even now, some artists that 'faded away' in the USA, did and still do huge business in the Philippines, selling out big arenas.

Filipino 'artists' also take those (and country music hits) and redo them, making them even softer and sappier. They make the late Don Ho seem 'edgy'!

That said, as to be expected in a nation of over a 100 million, there's a bit of everything, with a few kids into death metal (like Japan) and pretty much every genre out there, but if I've ever seen a nation that loved sweet, mushy, sentimental ballads and love songs, it's the Philippines.

I never had heard of Jim Brickman until he came to our USA town to perform in concert. There sure were a lot of Filipinas there.

Around the time of England Dan's death in 2008 I ran into John Ford Coley playing at one of the malls in Manila.

If I make it to the Phils,  my collection of old Top 40 love hits won't go to waste then.  8)

Seems like John Ford Coley is still touring.  Really hasn't been on my radar for 30 years but hey.  Even though I like the song "I'd Really Love to See you Tonight"

That's a great song and is beloved by many Filipinos. Same w/ Michael Martin Murphy's excellent "What's Forever For' and  the late Keith Whitley's fine "When you say Nothing at all"--they've been covered by many Filipino and espec. 'When you say nothing-'....by USA artists too.

The diversity of songs Filipinos know--many songs released before they were born, is amazing. They love some American artists that are hardly known here. Like Jim Brickman, who I saw live here--my wife was all about it.

Some of Neil Young's great stuff--"Comes a Time" his cover of 'Four Strong Winds and others, are well received and played often there. Interestingly, the Beatles aren't nearly as big there as they are in most countries

And despite one of Ed Sheeran's entourage getting upset with the mob scene at the Manila Airport and calling the Filipino crowd 'monkeys'--they LOVE his stuff.

The Beatles, way back when, refused to give a private concert for then First Lady Imelda Marcos, (still worth 900 million--all of it stolen--and they STILL elect her to offices) and they said they were treated so bad as a result, they feared for their very lives.

Justin Bieber--never known for tact, also insulted Filipinos while there as I recall.--I think he hit a fan or camera person--some such thing.

Like they told Sheeran's employee: Behavior like that can get you banned from the Philippines forever.

Justin Bieber gets in fights everywhere he goes.  He got mad at Orlando Bloom in Ibiza Spain.  So if he is hated in the Phils, that is a huge bonus.
