A Cautionary Tale
« on: December 29, 2011, 06:05:11 PM »
A 19 year old colombiana is being booted out of Canada without her ten month old. Below the story from El Pais in Spanish and below that for those who don't speak the lingo the google translation link.

We have many, many Colombians coming here to Canada and claiming refugee status.  Immediate welfare, free health care, free English classes and bus transportation, and many other services for years as the claim works its way through the system.

Two or three years ago Uribe came up on a state visit, probably as part of free trade talks (I don't remember the details now), but he emphasized how much more secure Colombia is now and how there are many fraudulent refugee claims.  Since then, the Canadian gov't has been cracking down on Colombian refugee claims, and many are being refused and deported (still takes years).  A couple of my friends were deported in just the last few months.

I figured the US would have taken them in and gave them jobs picking fruit!  I know of a Colombian man who was caught recently for being in the US illegally. They found out he had been deported twice already. He married a lady that is here legally and now he will be allowed to stay! Our government is nothing but a bunch of hosers!

Ha! I bet the majority of Colombians in the UK arrived by this very route - demanding (yes - demanding) their right to asylum under the terms of a Geneva Convention from 1951 concerning political refugees.

I did some unofficial research once and was informed by word of mouth that at one point there were networks of "Mr Fixits" active in the Vale and parts of the Zona Cafeteria offering solutions to any would-be UK-bound asylum seeker. This conveyor belt was supposedly stopped supposedly around 10 years ago when Colombia was put on a "white list" of countries from where claims for Political Asylum would not be considered by default (all LA countries were infact included on this list.) However, words such as "horse" "bolted" "locking" "stable" and "door" spring to mind.

Despite this, the political asylum route is still one open to abuse by more intrepid parties. From what I know, claims of persecution on the grounds of sexual orientation still provide grounds on which to have asylum cases heard. There was a news report not far back describing how lesbians facing "persecution" in the caribbean were being granted asylum here in the UK. It's great to think this country is now portraying itself as a lighthouse to attract gays, lesbians, bis, TVs, maricones and various other wonderful deviants the world over... it makes me proud.
