Colombian Cerveza
« on: October 07, 2011, 05:40:55 PM »
Colombia isn't known for their fine crafted beer but things are slowly starting to change.  I'm happy to report that there is another good beer being made in Colombia with the odd name of Duff.  I purchased some recently at a Carrefour and was pleasantly surprised when it came time to open up a bottle.  I believe that it is made in Medellin along with another great beer company located there, 3 Cordilleras.

Here are their respective web sites:

Ahh, Samuel you are speaking my language! I've never tried Duff but it has to be good if Homer Simpson likes it.

Samuel, your last name wouldn't happen to be Adams would it?   Just joking!

Thanks for the info Samuel. I've never been too impressed with Colombian beer. Its good to hear they are getting more to choose from.

Yoyo Rese!

I'm not a conoisseur, I just like Tecate or Bud here in the states...when in colombia I drank Aguila or Club Colombia or whatever it is called.  They tasted sooooo good when i was sweating all over myself! Very refreshing!  I'll try Duff next time I'm in a restaurant next time I'm there!

Thanks, Samuel for bringing this to our attention.

Interesting they named it after homer simpson's favorite beer. I wonder if that was on purpose?

I like Club Colombia it's ok for my taste.

Club for me too.  But I have a mystery maybe you guys can help me with ...

When I am in the states and drink med to high (I am almost always in bed by2 or 3 in the US), I almost always wake up with a hangover.  I can pretty much count the next day a wash.

However, when I am in  Colombia, and drink the same amount OR MORE, and get LESS sleep, I seem to be better off physically ALL THE TIME.   I really can't remember being hung over in Colombia in 18 months (and I go out ALOT).    I have been back in the USA for 2 weeks, and have already had two hangovers.

WTF?!?!?

And, yeah, the best idea is to drink in moderation - i am working on it:)

I'm sure they had that in mind.  I guess they thought they could get away with any copyright infringement.  Take a look at the label of a Duff beer and the can that Homer is reaching for.

I did a little more digging and came up with some interesting information on the name choice and come to find out that Duff is made by 3 Cordilleras.  (No wonder it tastes so good.)  Here is the link on the story: http://manzapivo.blogspot.com/2011/10/los-hermanos-de-duff-la-verdadera.html

Club Colombia is the best out of all the carbonated horse piss Bavaria SA produces.  They reportedly have 98% of the beer market locked up in Colombia according to this one article on ColombiaReports (http://colombiareports.com/opinion/matthew-helm/12161-try-finding-a-beer-that-is-not-bavaria-sa.html).

There is also another small craft beer made in Colombia called San Tomas made by Inducerv.  I think I have had it before but can't recall how it tastes.  They reportedly have four styles of beer to choose from.

Zon, it could be that somehow you are more dehydrated here in the States. When I travelled to Mexico I would get bad hangovers. As it turned out I was also dehydrated alot of the time but didn't notice because of the desert dry heat.Once I upped my daily water intake the hangovers weren't as bad.I did find a beer there that I still drink. Negra Modelo is my favorite. It can be a little pricey but I have never had a hangover from it.

Zon, I've had a similar question so I looked it up and the possible culprits are dehydration or food allergies. Some beer makers put preservatives in their beer and some of us are allergic to the preservatives. Sometimes the allergies don't show up until later in life when our immune system is not so healthy because of other pollutants we are ingesting. this can happen to foreign beers as well. A while back I was in Southeast Asia and got very hung over drinking only 3 bottles of Heinekin.
I agree with Researcher, Modelo Beer from Mexico is my favorite (Especiál, not Negro) and I can drink 5 or 6 over the course of an outdoor bbq in the hot weather and not get a headache. But, one or two Budweisers WILL give me a headache.

I forgot to add that these craft beers aren't cheap.  The Duff I purchased at Carrefour cost a little under 6.000 pesos per bottle.  :o

Interesting - "Zon, I've had a similar question so I looked it up and the possible culprits are dehydration or food allergies."

As I reflect the partying is HARDER in Colombia - dancing, language, new environments, being watchful of surrondings for possible dangers.  I am more ALERT and ENGAGED.  There is a different energy entirely.  When, in the USA, between every sentence someone is offering a new drink, or something to eat - with no water.  There is a sense of being UNENGAGED.

Whatever the cause in the USA, it SUCKS.  Whatever the remedy in Colombia, it ROCKS.

My brothers in law sometimes drink Poker brand beer. Too watery for me. I sometimes go to Bogota Beer Company and have couple of beers I like there.Monserrate Roja and Chapinero Porter are my usual choice.

Modelo Especial is ok. It is considered Mexico's premium beer. They even have stores called Modelloramas. There you can get the beer as well as clothes and other things with their logo. Corona is their cheap stuff. When I was there you could get a six pack for a buck. A gringo drinking a Corona usually got snickered at because it was a sure sign you were a "green" gringo.

Costena brand beer has a decent texture to it and is a little heaver then other lagers, but in general, Colombian beers, Ecuadorian beers suck unless you like the watered down American type beers like Bud, Miller, Coors, ect. Well. Coors is a little better . PBR I like a lot for a cheap American , but they just went out of Biz :(

That's a good observation Zon.It kinda goes along the same lines as "gringos have meetings not parties".

It does depend on the age group though. For older gringos like me I'd say the above applies but for the younger crowd the opposite is true.If you are a gringo guy in your 20's and early 30's  remember this: Latino guys your same age are all about competition. This applies to pretty much everything and has to do with the machismo culture. From real competitions like playing soccer, pool, etc...to things like playing guitar even. When one of my latino friends invited me over to play guitar it always turned into a competition.

Drinking and being able to hold your liquor is included. When I was younger I at least tried to keep up because you don't have to always win at these competitions but you do need to hold your own.Otherwise you lose their respect.I had many nights where I woke up the next day and couldn't recall how I got home...if I was at home. A couple of times I woke up in the desert but that's another story.

Now that I'm in the "old farts club" the competition isn't as intense. Things are more about enjoying family and life in general with these older latinos. It's no challenge for a young latino to compete with an older guy. So if I hang out with the young crowd there isn't much of the competition unless I chose to do so and drinking is included.  I see it as an advantage of being in the "old farts club"!
