Electric Water Heater/Dispenser Recommendations
« on: October 18, 2010, 01:20:48 PM »
Does anyone have any recommendations as to buying an electric water heater/dispenser? My wife and I are constantly using our electric kettle to boil water to make tea, noodles etc so I figured it would be a good idea if I bought one of the heater/dispensers so that we have hot water immediately available all the time. My wife's parents have one and use it constantly throughout the day so I figured it would be good to have one when they come visit us.

I bought a rice cooker made by Zojirushi last year which I really like a lot so I was thinking about sticking with Zojirushi for the water dispenser as well. I think that I should get at least a 3 Liter model. Any suggestions?

Hey Cap, does your wife drink the tap water where you live at all? Your post reminded me of my fiance's comment that she didn't think she'd ever be able to trust tap water and would want to boil it just in case (the tap water is better quality than bottled water where I live).

The Zojirushi models look pretty good. The DSC40 sounds pretty sweet, though a little expensive...might be able to make up the difference with energy savings though since it's better insulated.

Crap, another thing I'll probably have to buy...

No recommendations on an electric water heater cap, but if your microwave oven has a temp probe, it works like a champ for heating H2O, liquids, soups, etc. to the desired temp.

No, neither my wife nor I will drink unboiled tap water, no matter where we are. My wife (like most other Chinese that I know) will not drink cold water at all - she either drinks bottled water at room temperature or hot water that has just been boiled. I am sure that your fiancée will be consuming a lot of boiled water also, so at the very least you will need to buy an electric tea kettle. A good rice cooker is pretty much a must as well - we use ours several times a day every day. It has a timer on it so we set it to cook congee for breakfast just about every morning and then of course we have rice for dinner practically every night and sometimes for lunch. Our Zojirushi works really well and was well worth the extra money.

Ray,

You are right - that is what we currently use, together with the electric tea kettle but I am looking to get something so that I have immediate access to a good amount of hot/boiling water for the extra convenience. I can't even tell you how many kettles of water that my wife boils throughout the day.

Actually, my fiance prefers noodles to rice...she only ate rice maybe once when we were in Taiwan and maybe 1-2 times in Thailand. Actually the time she ordered rice in Taiwan I think she made me eat most of it....seems like some people in Taiwan are noodle people and some rice people. She will definitely be boiling a lot of water though.

I drink a lot of tea so it would be a plus for me. By the time I boil water, brew the tea, and cool it off I really don't have the time for more than a cup of tea in the morning before heading off for work. Around the time she gets here I will probably start working about half the day at a home office so it would be real nice to have hot water waiting for another cup of tea.

Congee in the morning sounds pretty nice though...are you able to put some meat and/or vegetables in the cooker with the rice?

Yes, we add all sorts of different things in the cooker along with the rice for congee so that we can have a variety. Sometimes we will use regular rice to make congee and other times we will use glutinous rice instead so that it will be somewhat sweet.

Sounds pretty good. Will have to remember that...sounds like a good breakfast during the work week.
