Fave domestic airline?
« on: August 13, 2010, 09:20:13 PM »
Was considering the Avianca airpass to bounce around but found less expensive options with the other carriers

What is your fave airline based on experience?

Who should I avoid?

Do i need to look out for baggage fees?

just paid $80 r/t in luggage for Spirit (1 checked, 1 carry on x2) - but i cant complain because my total trip was $310 FLL>BAQ r/t

I haven't flown much domestically in Colombia: once on Avianca and once on Aires.  Avianca was better - hotter flight attendents and free food and booze.

The flights are much cheaper for domestic flights if you book them while in Colombia ... usually about $US125 return.

Many people complain about Spirit, but I always find them to have the lowest price and that's what I'm looking for.  I've also had two delayed flights out of Detroit that caused me to miss my connections to Colombia, but they have always managed to get me there the same day on another airline (although it's a pain in the butt and stressful).

And for me it's great that Spirit is now flying to Barranquilla!  In the past I've always had to fly in to Cartagena and take a shuttle van to BAQ.

For sure, Whitey is right about booking dosmetic air fares while you are in Colombia.  Yes, it is about $125 US

Check:  http://www.avianca.com.co  and you will be surprised to find the different between booking in Colombia and the flight website (for example: http://www.expedia.com) from your country.

When I was in Cali last October, I made last minute booking to go to Santa Marta - the next day!  I was surprised to find how cheap it was!   But it is best to book in advance just in case the cheapest fare has sold out.

I have been to Colombia 6 times, and have travelled by:

Virgin Atlantic (London to Miami); American Airline (Miami - Cali) - once
Iberia (London to Bogota via Madrid) - 3 times
Air Comet (London to Bogota via Madrid) - once
Connential (London to Bogota via Newark) - once

Avianca - dosmetic
