Boost Mobile now has a $ 60, unlimited talk, roaming, long distance, international send and receive text. So, if your like me, and like to send a lot of text messages to Colombia, or any other country, you can send as many as you want. Verizon, At&t, T-Mobile all charge for sending international text messages, around $ .20 per each, which adds up fast.

You want to put a smile on your novias face, send her a happy, cute text message once in a while, really makes them happy to know you are thinking about them

been about 2 weeks, switched  over from Verizon to Boost mobile ,  so far, not a problem. every text i sent to Colombia cell phone, Tigo, Comcel, Movistar, all have received the text messages from Boost.

the coverage seems to be as good as T Mobile and Verizon,  Havent had any drooped calls and no complaints.  And $ 60. phone bill  compared to $ 110 .bill  i was paying for Verizon, I'm happy i switched.

de nada

i was hoping somebody, Att, Verizon, t mobile ect  would come up with a realistic plan that included unlimited everything which includes  international text, but so far, only Boost Mobile  and Cricket offer a send/receive unlimited text option for international text.

the others charge $.20 for every text you send, which doesn't seem like much, but when you send 3 or 4 per day, it adds  about $ 30 to your phone bill every month which i was paying at Verizon. And at $ 60 flat rate from Boost unlimited everything, with no tax or fees you cant beet the price.

Hey mudd, do you have any recommendations for a decent carrier in Colombia who I can switch out my SIM card to use when I am in country?

I hate having to use my T-Mobile to call the states. It's like $2.00 a minute or something which is ridiculous... >:(

It should be noted that Boost is a Sprint subsidiary using MOSTLY the old iDEN (Nextel) network. They just activated Boost on the current CDMA network recently. Right now things are a little shaky on the Boost CDMA side, but by the end of the year there should be ZERO coverage/quality difference between Sprint and Boost.

I just went to the Boost website and for the 60 a month plan they say international texts are .10 each and the calls are .23 per minute. So i am not sure what plan you are referring to. As far as using the sprint network goes, that is not a good thing. I have used Sprint for the last 2 years and i can't get reception in my own house.

get the $ 50 unlimited plan and add the $ 10 unlimited send/receive international  text to it, same plan i have.  its $ 60 total, no tax or fees. and you can set up direct billing to your credit card also, so don't have to worry about billing.

i tried Cricket, but had no service at my house, then tried Boost, not a problem good signal everywhere i have gone.

correct, Boost is the previous Nextel service, which out here in San Diego, works great.

i used my t-mobile  phone one time in Colombia, only when it was absolutely necessary, because of the $ 2.99 minute roaming.

i have a Comcel and Tigo sim card that i use while in Colombia, i prefer the Tigo, signal is about as good, but it s alot cheaper to call the USA from Tigo than Comcel. about $ .20 a minute as i remember, compared to about $.45 for Comcel.

Thanks for the info. mudd. So I understand you use Tigo and Comcel. Do you know what the rate is calling the U.S. if I used prepaid whiile in CO?
I have a prepay T-Mobile plan now since I never ended up using my minutes before with a regular plan. I imagine it would be more than .20/min...

 Regards, Pivery :)

I would be surprised if the pre-paid T-Mobile works in Colombia AT ALL. Most carriers disable international roaming on pre-paid accounts.

 Hey Woody,

That's what I figured. I just changed it a couple of months ago into a prepaid and haven't try to use it while in CO. yet, but I didn't expect it to work if it was $2.99/min when it
was on a regular plan. I'll probrably just switch out the SIM with a Tigo or Comcel SIM...

Thanks for the info and good luck in your search of your lady! 8)

No problem. As for my search, it will progress very slowly until I gain a decent command of the spoken language. That is part of the reason I am planning a one month trip to Medellin in March. It will be a sink or swim situation with total language immersion. This trip is to have fun(extreme sports), develop a functional vocabulary, and if I hapen to stumble into a great woman then that would be fantastic.

i have not seen a prepaid US phone work in Colombia, ATT or T-mobile and definitely not  CDMA Verizon. you would think that they would, but they don't.

if you want to call the USA from a cell phone in Colombia, use Tigo, they have the best rates between comcel and movistar

 Mudd,

So can I not take an unlocked phone to Colombia and replace the SIM with say a Tigo or ? SIM card to be used there?
I have an unlocked T-Mobile Dash and I am going to be spending a good amount of time there next week or so.

 Greetings Woody,

Having a good command of the language is a great idea and it shows the women as well as the people in general there a certain level of respect for their culture and language.
Even if it's broken/spelled wrong, it goes a long way as you are showing them that you are actually trying to learn.

Again good luck and best regards,

Pivery

Oh no, you can do that just fine. Especially with an unlocked Dash as it is a quad-band phone. Just pop in a Colombian SIM (prepaid or not) and it will function just fine.

Hey Woody, that's sort of what I thought. My fiancee has Tigo, so I am hoping to get a SIM card to be able to
use some sort of prepay plan for while I am there to make and receive calls.

Cheers,

ahhhhhhh  yes, 95% of " unlocked" GSM phones ( att, t mobile )  will work in colombia, i thought you were trying to use a current prepaid locked t mobile  phone that you were useing now  in USA, and tryign to call the USA while in colombia  with your left over minutes, which will not work

i have 3 prepaid t mobile samsung phones i took to colombia, had them unlocked, and all  work great,

That's good to know mudd. I do love seeing those people at the corners with the cell phones tied to themselves for people to use, very novel, but I would rather just have my own while
in country. 8)
