Internet café scams and Medellin scams
« on: January 07, 2010, 11:05:41 AM »
I know this is nothing new in Russia, Ukraine cafes, but a first for here, While in Medellin, met some new friends here, and a girl who I go to know pretty well.   Lets call her “ Maria”   after spending some time with mutual friends, I got to know her pretty well, I  Was walking in her neighborhood, saw an internet  café and asked her if  that’s where she checks her e mail, since she doesn’t have internet in her house. She said “yes, when its not too busy there, but its always full”, and they have like 15 computers, which  seemed a little strange, since it’s a small barrio, and  most barrio café have 5 to 8 computers and are usually not too full.   So I asked why so many people using the café, then she tells me why

Apparently, the café is  owned by a gringo who lives here, and his novia is running it, they have 5 to 6 part time girls who  are on many internet dating sites, scamming guys for $$$$$. And if the girls gets a client to send $$$, the girls gets a cut of the $$$$. It’s the usual stories, sick mother, needs $$$ for shoes, food, school ect.  I would think by now, that most guys would be hip to the internet scams, and would never send $$$ to a girl they have never met from internet sites, but apparently not.

Other thing guys I hope would not be dumb enough to fall for here.  Girls here will meet a gringo, invite him out for drinks, dinner, ECT, invite a friend, run up a bill and expect him to pay for it. It’s a normal thing with girls here to line up an unsuspecting foreigner, invite him out with a few friends, run up the bill and then expect him to pay for it.

A few days ago, two girls I met, tried this on me and my friend, they were at a bar, drinking and called us up, asked us to meet them there, which usual means “we want to drink, party but want somebody else to pay for it” and no local guy is dumb enough to do it, so they call a gringo.  Which we already knew the scam, so we said ok,   met them there, they were downing the local alcohol, running up the bill, we ordered a few drinks on our own, but when they went to the bathroom, we called the waiter over and told him, that our bill was separate from theirs.  So the girls come back, order some more drinks, and after about 2 hours, we were ready to leave. The bills comes over, they see 2 separate bills and are a little surprised, we pay or bill and get up, start walking out, and they are still sitting there, looking shocked, little mad and pissed,  we smiled at each other and just kept walking.

I cried...I never thought grown men could resort to passive agressiveness like women do.

I'd say that gringos mostly have a reputation for being suckers.

my favorite one is in  medellin........... my friends call it " dinner by gringo"    you will invite a girl to dinner, just to eat something small, and chat,....... then she shows up with a cousin, friend, ...... or friends, order one of the most expensive thing  on the menu that they would never  order before, or on their own, or if they were out with their friends. of course her cousin or friend  will follow suit. then they will order 3 or 4 drinks, not really talk about anything important,  and then leave the guy with the  bill and go out with other friends. :D  not that its  alot of $$ for a gringo, just the point of it.

seen that happen many times, even got me once or twice.
