Seeking Stories of Being Married IN Colombia
« on: March 28, 2009, 10:37:31 PM »
I have gone from novice to intermediate pretty fast - still not a pro.  so, I would appreciate a discussion on the following topic:

What about getting married to a Colombiana and living in Colombia. What are the legal requirements and consequences?  Are there any success stories?  Are there any horror stories?

I am all ears ...

from what i have gathered from viasjourney is that you need your documents ie divorce decree, birth certificate translated into spanich and apostilled. Plus you need 2 people to certify that you are single. All need to be notarized plus have a copy of your passport. Once you marry a Colombiana you have the right to stay there, as long as you stay within the laws.

That is all I got, I am sure others here have some stories on this.

San Andreas Isaland  is the place to marry in Colombia for a gringo, so much less paperwork!

I heard this option is no longer available and the exclusions were recently disallowed.

There is a big upside to getting married and staying living in Colombia (as in not letting her get a visa to the US).

First you won't have to go thru the visa process...and secondly she won't be able to touch your assets in the states in case of a divorce.

The down side is she will be entitled to half of the appreciation of your assets in Colombia while married and of course anything you purchase while you are married.....unless you have a pre-nup that states otherwise....and the prenups here are pretty much iron clad. I'd suggest you set a fixed dollar amount instead of a percentage of your assets because that might be open to interpretation.
