Also, if you plan to travel around in Colombia, check the CDC's website to see if you need any vaccinations.I got a yellow fever shot and took an antibiotic for malaria when I went to Santa Marta....

I was thinking about that. Actually, I'm a little behind on my shots for the U.S....

brush your teeth with beer.

Actually a shot of everclear (drinking alcohol) in water kills anything alive in there - strictly for medicinal purposes of course.

I've never understood the gringo obsession with water but then I've never had problems either. I usually follow the lead of the locals - if they drink it then I drink it. In Mexico not even the locals I was with drank the tap water.

I always went with whether or not the hotel gave water in the rooms for free to its patrons. Never steered me wrong so far. But then- I have not hoteled in Mexico in the last 40 years.

Once again, go to the CDC website and read "safe food and water" under the travellers section. What causes problems is the fact that sanitary conditions are not as good as here in the US.I never thought about this until a coworker came back from Mexico with e-coli.Still, I didn't let it stop me from travelling, I was just a little more careful.I use bottled water to brush my teeth with and I'm just careful not to ingest any water in the shower....also to be on the safe side I drink beer and rum instead of water :)...just to be safe...salud..
