Does anyone trade in Colombia?
« on: June 16, 2007, 11:37:12 AM »

Does anyone trade US markets in Colombia?  I would like to move to Colombia with my wife.   Does Colombia have broadband Internet, and is it reliable and fast enough to trade Level II?

Yes, I have broadband internet.

What companies you will have access to (and consequently the connection speed) will be dependent on what barrio and what building  you live in here in Cali.

I have ETB but there were other companies that I would have preferred to use because they were a much faster connection but they wouldn’t install the network into my building unless I could get at least 10 people in my building to buy their service.

The main complaint that I have with ETB is that it is a satellite service and you have to login to connect thus I can’t use my Vonage phone.

My contact expires in a couple of months so I’m going to look for a faster, always on connection to use my Vonage phone there.

Check back and I’ll let you know what I find out.

TelMex is the largest and most reliable ISP in Colombia, according to my sources... I believe they are in most major cities and in most upper end barrios.  Most office buildings and high end businesses subscribe to Telmex for their network communication, including the U.S. State Department.

I daytrade the Russell E-Mini and will consider doing it when I am in Colombia as long as I have two ISP services (for backup).  High speed internet is very expensive down in Colombia compared to the US and what Colombia considers 'high speed' is 200kb ...or higher!   My Comcast typically screams at 6 Mb+.  I would recommend contacting TelMex and getting a quote for a 2 Mb+ service.

Send me a PM 'valuedcustomer' if you want more info or if you want to talk shop.

Wiki has some good info on TelMex as well.

My connection is 10Mb and I pay 85,000 peso per month. I checked out ETB's website and I see they have a 20Mb connection for 225,000 pesos per month.

Pete and Jack had a much faster connection in Juanambu the next barrio over from mine but they were paying around 500,000 pesos per month.

They were in a strata 6 and I'm in a strata 5 barrio. I wonder if anyone knows if Internet Service Providers in Cali use stratas in there pricing.

We have EMcali, phone plus broadband , unilimited usage for 200k COP per month. They claim 500k, it's not that good. With this service you get about 400 down and 150 or so up. In Medellin, we have Orbitel, 500/500, still giving about the same speed as cali for 195k cop. I think Cable net will be servicing all of cali and med. soon.

www.cable.net.co    they claim up to 2gig up and down.

I don't trade so i've got no idea of how fast you need. Though you'd want to over-buy speed in colombia, to get what you probably want.

I used Orbitel while staying in Cali... I would not recommend it...daytraders can't have ANY outages in service...Orbitel worked most of the time but did have time periods where there was no communication during the day.  That's why I will have two different ISP's....that will make it rather pricey compared to the USA but not a big deal for (successful) online traders.

As good as Tradestation is as a trading platform, it still is stupido since it can't sound an alarm when it loses communication with the host server...duh!

In my apartment in Cali (Santa Teresita in the west) I have cablenet.  They offer various speeds.   I do not remember which speed I have but the service has been excellent.  I trade on the forex and I have had no issues at all.  Initially I had uniweb and the service was awful but ever since cablenet and telmex started running new cable primarily in the north and west of Cali the service has gotten better and better.  So yes you definitely can trade from Cali.  Daytrader is correct that you certainly would want a back up or  have your brokerage firms number programed into your cell phone so you can call and close your trade in the event you lose service...Jim!

Thanks for the information.  It is great to see that there are guys who are successfully trading from Cali.  I had my wife ask about broadband the last time she went to Colombia but the people she asked said there wasn’t any.  Maybe it was because she couldn’t pronounce it and kept saying “broodband”.

She might have had more luck if she simply said "banda ancha". Most people speak spanish in Colombia. hehehe !!
